PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2026: Subsidy & Application Guide

Understand PM Surya Ghar subsidy slabs, official application stages, vendor checks and documents. Prepare with primary sources and local DISCOM verification.

A subsidy can reduce the cost of rooftop solar. It does not remove the need to choose a suitable system, agree a clear installation price and complete the application correctly.

For PM Surya Ghar, keep three things separate from the start: your contract with the installer, your electricity utility’s requirements and the government assistance process. A promise made in one conversation should not be mistaken for approval of all three.

Start at the government portal

The official address is pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Use its current consumer process and registered-vendor information. Solarower explains the scheme; we do not accept applications or collect bank documents.

Before sharing documents with anyone, check which organisation is asking for them and why. Keep your application reference and your own access to the account. You should be able to see what has been submitted and whether a correction is pending.

How the household subsidy is calculated

The standard central assistance is ₹30,000 per kWp for the first 2 kWp, followed by ₹18,000 for the next kWp. Under that standard household slab, capacity above 3 kWp does not increase the ₹78,000 cap.

Standard household central assistance, subject to eligibility
Installed module capacity Standard CFA
1 kWp ₹30,000
2 kWp ₹60,000
3 kWp or more ₹78,000 maximum

These figures describe support, not an installer’s price list. The National Portal is the starting point for your application. A supplier quoting a “price after subsidy” should still show the gross amount, assistance assumed and payment milestones.

The MNRE residential CFA guidelines list higher special-category rates: ₹33,000/kWp for the first 2 kWp and ₹19,800 for the next, or ₹85,800 at 3 kWp. The listed areas are Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, the North East including Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep. Confirm the category applicable to your connection. Treat any separate state assistance as a separate check.

Check the proposal before you pay a deposit

The household framework concerns residential grid-connected rooftop solar. Do not apply its slabs to a commercial connection or a standalone off-grid installation. Ask the registered vendor to identify the exact equipment and provide the required compliance evidence.

DCR means the scheme’s domestic-content requirement; a brand’s Indian address is not a substitute for model-level evidence. Have the vendor confirm the applicable documentation and equipment-list requirements for the proposed installation. The July 2025 amendment to the residential guidelines should be read alongside the scheme documents.

Hybrid or unusual metering arrangements need a specific answer from the utility. A battery in the quotation does not, by itself, settle eligibility. Nor should a larger inverter label be used as a shortcut for calculating assistance.

Before committing, ask: “If the proposed equipment or documentation fails the scheme checks, who will correct it, and what does our agreement say about the cost?” Get the answer into the written scope.

Keep a record of each stage

The following is a tracking guide rather than a copy of every portal screen. Local implementation and screen names can change.

  1. Application: use the correct consumer number and utility. Check applicant and connection details before submission.
  2. Connection requirements: follow the current load, feasibility and other instructions applicable to your case. Do not assume another household’s experience settles yours.
  3. Vendor agreement: settle models, capacity, exclusions, service responsibilities and payment stages before installation.
  4. Installation record: retain invoices and the equipment and commissioning documents required by the process.
  5. Utility checks and metering: track inspection, metering formalities and any corrections requested.
  6. Assistance claim: complete the portal’s claim or redemption steps and check the recorded bank or loan-account details.

Follow the current portal workflow for the actual application. “Submitted” is a stage to track, not a reason to assume the benefit has already been credited.

Prepare the documents without oversharing

Start a folder with a recent electricity bill, consumer details, roof permission information where required and the written quotation. Add invoices, application references and commissioning records as the job progresses. Supply bank or loan-account proof through the official process when requested.

That is a preparation list, not a universal document checklist. The portal and DISCOM determine the requirements for your case. A useful folder makes a correction easier to resolve; sending every private document to every adviser does not.

“Muft Bijli” still needs a household budget

Do not translate the scheme name into a promise of a free installation or a zero total electricity bill. Generation varies, your use has a timing pattern, and local billing can include fixed charges. Likewise, an annual average of solar production is not the same amount delivered every month.

The PIB scheme explainer provides background on household support and vendor selection. Its older financing examples are not a current loan offer. If borrowing is involved, ask the bank for today’s rate, fees, repayment schedule and the treatment of subsidy receipts.

Keep a gross-cost budget as well as an after-assistance budget. If the expected credit is delayed, the installation contract and loan repayments do not automatically pause with it.

What to do when something is unclear

Check the exact stage and the responsible party. A quotation question goes to the vendor; a metering requirement goes to the utility; a portal correction needs the instructions shown against the application. Save the answer with its date.

Be particularly careful with deadlines. A notice about legacy claims should not be read as a deadline for every new applicant. We have not established a universal new-application deadline from the reviewed sources; check the dated official notice relevant to your category.

Choose your system around the home, rather than the subsidy cap. The sizing estimate, savings calculation and installation checklist can help you prepare questions before a site assessment.
